Publishing Pick
A few things here: (1) This is a debut. (2) The comps are big sellers. (3) a major deal at auction (4) 2 book deal. Wow. That’s huge. Congrats, Natalie!
Imaginary Lunch Date
I’ve been up since three AM to make it to David Joy’s campground up in the hills by five. My mom-SUV rolls over a log-sized root and I come to a stop feet from Joy who stands with a cup of coffee in one hand and a Bowie knife in the other. He is the darker side of the L.L.Bean catalog, rugged and out-doorsy with a hint of banjo-rage. I’m terrified, but he likes books, so I think things are probably cool. I hand him donuts. We talk about dogs and our ancestral witchy women. He shows me how to cast my fishing line. He watches me do it and says, “Nope.” I decide to sit on a rock instead. I tell him about the time I saw him at a literary festival and held up a copy of When These Mountains Burn accusing him of being the author. He doesn’t remember my experience, but I remember his boots and camo baseball cap.
Coming up…
I’m excited about our QueryWork. I’ve got some submissions to send out for critique.
I’m working on the next Editor Series post.
I’m reading Annie Dillard right now. That doesn’t mean I’m understanding Annie Dillard right now.
Hanging in there? Let me know.
Pup Pics
This is what I imagine Pip looked like as a puppy. You’re welcome.
